A cold, wet nose shoved under your hand for some strokes, is one of life\u2019s joys isn\u2019t it? Let\u2019s face it, a dry nose isn\u2019t such a terrible thing either!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puppy dry nose is usually just where the moisture has evaporated from a dog\u2019s nose. It may well feel quite warm to the touch, as having a moist nose helps a puppy stay cool.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A puppy should really have a wet nose because it helps their olfactory system work &#8211; that\u2019s the bodily system which is their wonderful sense of smell. Having a lubricated nose, means that they can trap scent particles effectively. A puppy with a dry nose, can\u2019t smell things quite so well. Even with a dry nose though they are way better sniffers than us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does my puppy have a dry nose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy has a dry nose you\u2019re probably wondering why and if you should be worried about it?&nbsp;&nbsp;Well, we&#8217;ve got you covered, carry on reading to find out all you need to know about puppy dry nose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your puppy might have a dry nose because they\u2019ve just woken up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like us when we wake up with a dry mouth, our puppy has dry nose because they\u2019ve been sleeping! They\u2019re probably not drinking much during the night, so their nose dries out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puppy dry nose can be caused by too much sun<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy has been lying outside and sunbathing, then they\u2019ve probably got quite hot and their nose has dried out. Be careful as noses frequently get sunburnt, and your puppy may get a cracked and dry nose if you leave them to their own devices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puppy dry nose caused by dehydration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy hasn&#8217;t had any water in a while, or has been running around like crazy, and has over exerted themselves playing, then this can be a reason for puppy dry nose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some breeds are more prone to puppy dry nose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One-way dogs keep their nose moistened is by licking them. Brachycephalic (dogs with apartment faces) breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and Brussels Griffons have shorter muzzles which means they can&#8217;t lick their noses as their tongues won&#8217;t reach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way dogs keep their noses from becoming dry is via the tear ducts. Some breeds such as <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/breed-specific\/guide-how-to-train-cocker-spaniel-puppy\/\">Cocker Spaniels<\/a> can suffer from blocked tear ducts so their nose doesn\u2019t get a chance to be moisturised by the tear duct fluid.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puppy has dry nose caused by allergies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your puppy\u2019s nose is part of their skin system, so irritations and inflammation in other areas of the skin, caused by allergies, can affect their nose too.&nbsp; This might be a reason why you\u2019re seeing puppy dry nose. Allergies may be related to environmental reasons, or also related to <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/feeding\/puppy-nutrition-guide\/\">what food your puppy is eating.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puppy dry nose might be a symptom of something more serious<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy\u2019s dry nose is associated with other symptoms such as rubbing their face a lot, lethargy, lack of appetite, or diarrhea then do get in touch with your Vet. Always take water out with you in a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3x9G03L\">travel water bowl<\/a>, but also remember to take it out of your bag and actually give it to your puppy too!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, we\u2019ve heard people say that picking up water at night will help with <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/toilet-training\/how-to-toilet-train-a-puppy-full-guide\/\">toilet training<\/a>, but that can cause dehydration, puppy dry nose and isn\u2019t fair or ethical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use a nose balm on puppy dry nose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, nose balm is a thing. Be careful as many puppies will lick it off, so be sure to use a pet safe one like <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3GKysZv\">this one by the natural dog company<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can puppy dry nose be prevented?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re finding that your puppy is getting a dry nose, rest assured there are some easy ways to prevent it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevent puppy dry nose by keeping your puppy out of the sun<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the saying goes \u2018only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun\u2019 and you should try to keep your puppy out of the sun during the hottest part of the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Sunscreen if you have a particular color of pup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For some pups who have pink or pale noses then sun protection is a good idea to prevent sunburn. There aren\u2019t many dog sunscreens on the market yet, but we like this <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3aImIuN\">stick version<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puppy dry nose can be prevented by keeping your puppy hydrated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have fresh water available for your puppy at all times. If you go out with your puppy make sure you take a travel water bowl or bottle too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If your pup keeps getting a dry nose consider a moisturiser<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some pups will still get a dry nose, particularly if they\u2019re one of the breeds we talked about before.
