They even have their own name Toxocara Canis, which relates to their chosen host.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think about spag bol without the sauce. Roundworms look like long pieces of spaghetti and are white or light brown in color.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They live in a dog\u2019s gut, munching up all of their internal nutrients and laying eggs in their intestines. Your dog will then poop the roundworms out, and then they\u2019ll get eaten by other dogs to complete their life cycle. Roundworms will upset a growing puppy&#8217;s tummy and give them persistent diarrhea, or make their poop appear mucousy. Could your puppy previously hold it and was<a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/toilet-training\/how-to-toilet-train-a-puppy-full-guide\/\"> toilet trained<\/a>, but doesn\u2019t seem to be able to make it now? Do get them checked over and feed them a bland diet while they\u2019re getting over their worms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roundworm in puppies can cause vomiting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It gets grosser. Roundworms can make puppies actually sick. Take a peek next time at your puppies\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/illness\/puppy-vomiting-why-does-it-happen\/\">vomit <\/a>&#8211; you can maybe spot some nasty worms squirming around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roundworms look like grains of rice in your puppy\u2019s poop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see white flecks that look like rice in your puppy&#8217;s poop, or hanging around their bottom area, it\u2019s a good idea to get them checked for worms. Besides that, definitely give them a bath and keep them clean too! Didn\u2019t think you\u2019d have to wipe your puppy\u2019s bum, did you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A dull or dry coat can be caused by roundworm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The worms take away nutrients from puppies, so your puppy\u2019s coat can become dry or dull due to being deficient and not getting the proper level of <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/feeding\/puppy-nutrition-guide\/\">nutrition<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your puppy may develop a cough if they have roundworms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A weird piece of information you wish you hadn\u2019t read: Roundworms can move to your puppy\u2019s lungs and cause them to cough.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are puppies suffering from roundworms treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, roundworms in puppies are easily treated. Your breeder will probably advise you of an initial worming schedule because worms are just so common in new puppies. Once they are past the initial worming, vets generally recommend worming a puppy past 6 months of age every 3 months. Roundworms are not fun for any pup, so making sure you take the necessary precautions to avoid future infection will enable your pup to have a roundworm-free life!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips to prevent future infection from these nasty friends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep to a <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/parasites\/how-often-worm-puppy-vs-dog\/\">regular worming schedule<\/a> so that worms don\u2019t get a chance to settle in your puppy\u2019s gut.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worm all other dogs that live in your household too, or else they\u2019ll just pass them back to your puppy. No one wants to relive that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you clean up poop left by your puppy and any other dogs to stop your puppy eating them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach your puppy a reliable <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/commands\/how-to-teach-your-puppy-to-leave-it\/\">\u2018\u2019leave it<\/a>\u2019\u2019 to prevent them from eating other dog\u2019s poo when out and about. You\u2019ll see, dogs are weird about eating poop.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider a natural preventative. Freshly ground non-salted pumpkin seeds are a great option if you\u2019re averse to giving your puppy a more chemical wormer, or the wormer upsets their tummy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your puppy clean and free of poo on their bottom by <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/grooming\/puppy-grooming-tips\/\">grooming<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/grooming\/how-to-give-puppies-a-bath\/\">bathing <\/a>them regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019d love to talk more about roundworms but there\u2019s probably other things you enjoy doing with your day.
