Sometimes these issues will go deeper than a simple training plan due to the underlying emotional or physical content of what the dog is experiencing. However, for any dog guardian looking to \u2018stop\u2019 an undesirable dog behavior, first, take a breath and consider the following: In order to \u2018stop\u2019 doing something (let\u2019s take a dog who jumps as an example) what does the dog have to do first, that\u2019s right, they have to jump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait. What?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about and understand canine behavior<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Think about it – If I\u2019m going to stop smoking, I first have to take up the habit. And the thing about habits is – well – they become habitual, so, the more you practice a habit, the better you get at it. The better you get at it, the more you\u2019ll rely on it without thinking and it\u2019s very difficult to unlearn a habit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, a better approach would be: How do I prevent <\/em>my dog from repeating undesirable canine behavior, while I go about teaching something that I would <\/em>like my dog to do instead? This is where the frequently overlooked tool called \u2018good dog behavior management\u2019 can play a vital role in dog training and canine behavior modification. Never underestimate it, you\u2019re not cheating because you haven\u2019t spent hours working on a detailed training plan that you haven\u2019t got time to commit to. Careful and considerate management could be all that you need to reduce your stress and that of your dog. Good management could set you and your dog up for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive dog behavior management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s face it, we lead busy and demanding lives which frequently get in the way of our good dog training intentions, and then we feel like we\u2019ve failed. Why put yourself through that when a well-structured canine management option could really help you and your dog. And that\u2019s not to be perceived as a negative – it\u2019s a positive, pro-active approach that you can use long-term (when safe and ethical) or short-term if you have the time to plan and teach your dog an alternative behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what does good dog behavior management look like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are many structural factors that make up good dog behavior management but don\u2019t put too much pressure on yourself to get it right at the beginning. So, what does good dog behavioral management look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, let\u2019s start with something very basic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A lead is a management tool that prevents a dog from darting into traffic. A <\/a>long line attached to a well-fitted \u2018Y\u2019 shaped harness (and never to a dog\u2019s collar), could be a great management tool that prevents a young puppy or older dog who hasn\u2019t yet learned (or is struggling with) poor recall<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And talking of harnesses, a comfortable harness<\/a> can be a welcome management tool for those of us who don\u2019t have time or are struggling to teach relaxed lead walking. Preventing stress on the dog\u2019s neck from constantly pulling on a collar can prevent tracheal collapse later on in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding somewhere that is different and secure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Even hiring a secure field could be a great management solution for a dog who can\u2019t cope with being around other dogs or humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I start dog behavior management?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s go back to the time when you initially bring your puppy home and consider how to use appropriate management. We can prevent a puppy from wandering from room to room and getting into mischief by puppy-proofing the house<\/a> with barriers and baby gates. Stress-free management includes putting items that a puppy might chew and possibly choke on, away on a shelf behind closed doors, or in cupboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep them safe and secure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gradually introducing your puppy to a crate<\/a> or puppy pen<\/a> that will keep them secure and safe will manage their movements if you\u2019re not present. You can get through the puppy teething stage<\/a> by providing appropriate chews<\/a>, temporarily covering the bottom of kitchen cabinets or wooden chairs with cardboard, and storing a pricey rug to protect it from being destroyed by a dog who is still being potty trained<\/a>. Simply keeping the potty lid down or shutting the bathroom door can manage a dog\u2019s access to potentially harmful chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make their environment more desirable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Other areas where we can easily employ good dog behavior management to change the dog\u2019s environment and curb undesirable behaviors could be using window coverings to prevent dogs barking<\/a> at outside movement and keeping the radio on or playing white<\/a> or brown noise to prevent barking at external noises. For owners of dogs with separation anxiety<\/a>, good management could come in the form of a dog walker, sitter or professionally run day-care facility, thereby ensuring that the dog is never left alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let\u2019s shift our perspective away from \u2018stopping\u2019 behaviors that we don\u2019t like and move it to the under-estimated, stress-free concept called \u2018good management\u2019. Let\u2019s celebrate the benefits of a plan that involves responsible, creative and innovative management to help us live in harmony with our dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
