Use a marker word like \u2018good\u2019 to let your dog know that this is the place to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few treats when your dog is standing on the mat, use a release cue like \u2018ok\u2019 and toss a treat to get your dog off of the mat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shape this behavior by asking for a little more of your dog each time, start to reward when they have 4 paws on the mat, then wait for a sit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 4<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start adding duration so that your dog waits longer for a treat on the mat each time, after a few reps give them the release cue so that they keep returning to the mat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 5<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Work on the following to increase difficulty<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Duration (how long your dog can stay on the mat)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distraction (how distracting we are, or how distracting the environment is)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distance (how close to the mat do you need to be for your dog to go onto the mat)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have built up the time on the mat, and increased difficulty, you can start to add the verbal cue \u2018place\u2019 just before your dog goes to go on their mat or bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Practice the exercise in different locations to generalize the behavior, that way \u2018place\u2019 means place wherever you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Things to remember when training the place command<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Training place can be difficult, but follow these tips to help troubleshoot, and you\u2019ll have your puppy trained to go to their place in no time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start off really easy &#8211; shaping is done systematically, and in small increments, so it\u2019s almost impossible for your dog to get it wrong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use super yummy treats, and don\u2019t be stingy!\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep it fun and light &#8211; training is meant to be fun, not stressful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give your dog plenty of breaks &#8211; short sessions work much better<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you start adding levels of difficulty, don\u2019t make it too quick too soon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to teach your puppy place in public<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Teaching your puppy to place in public will be essential for those relaxing coffee meets, or some time in a dog friendly restaurant, without getting themselves in trouble.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s our tips to help with training the place command in public:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get your pup a travel mat or <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/puppy-essentials\/best-puppy-blankets\/\">blanket,<\/a> and train with it at home so they understand what it means when it goes on the floor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use plenty of treats to keep your pup in place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give them a stuffed <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/games-and-toys\/kong-puppy-toys\/\">Kong<\/a> or other enrichment toy to prevent boredom in a young puppy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the mat out and about to expose them to different environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mat should be their safe place, so if people approach, see if your puppy wants to engage with them, it\u2019s OK if your puppy does not want to be petted, give them the agency and they will be more confident in the long run.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your puppy is <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-behavior\/separation-and-sleep\/how-often-do-puppies-sleep\/\">sleeping<\/a> &#8211; don\u2019t let people wake them up because they want to \u2018say hi\u2019!
