If your puppy hasn\u2019t got used to being in a <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/puppy-essentials\/best-puppy-crates\/\">crate<\/a> at their breeder&#8217;s or previous home, then it\u2019s likely they will need some time to learn that crates are nice things, and you\u2019re not imprisoning them! We tend to rush <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/crate-training\/puppy-crate-training-guide\/\">crate training<\/a> and this is why puppies get anxious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crate anxiety, barrier frustration, confinement frustration and confinement anxiety are some of the many names that are given when puppies get anxious during<a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/crate-training\/puppy-crate-training-guide\/\"> crate training<\/a>. Fact is, crate anxiety can actually be really common for lots of puppies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips to calm your puppy&#8217;s anxiety in their crate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a well crate trained puppy (ha, geddit) there are some things you want to be aware of, here\u2019s our tips for successful crate training without anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduce the crate gradually<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Crates aren\u2019t something you can just shut puppies in and hope they\u2019ll get on with it. It\u2019s a good idea to wait until they are comfortable sleeping in the crate at night with the door closed before you attempt to close it during the day. Most puppies will accept it being closed at night.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take them out of the crate regularly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving your puppy in the crate too long can cause them to have accidents and leave them feeling stressed about being in the crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make sure they\u2019re ready to be crated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your puppy needs appropriate levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/puppy-essentials\/puppy-exercise\/\">physical exercise<\/a> (yes,<a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/training-basics\/puppy-walking-schedule\/\"> walks<\/a> if it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/getting-your-puppy\/when-can-puppies-go-outside\/\">safe for them to go outside)<\/a> so that they\u2019re not full of beans when it\u2019s time to crate them. If your puppy needs the toilet, they\u2019re also not going to want to go in or stay in their crate very long.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep an eye on them with a puppy cam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to leave your puppy in their crate, do a few trial runs and leave a puppy cam on and see how they cope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if my puppy has separation anxiety during crate training?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many puppies, who we think have <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-behavior\/separation-and-sleep\/puppy-separation-anxiety\/\">separation anxiety<\/a>, actually have crate anxiety and are much happier if left home alone with more room to roam.
