The difficulty of potty training your pup in the winter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Potty training in winter isn\u2019t impossible, but it can be harder than potty training<\/a> in the warmer months. Winter brings with it cold, dark mornings and evenings. Many puppies simply don\u2019t like the cold or dark, and can refuse to go outside at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It can also be tricky to be quick sometimes if you’re having to reach for coats and winter boots before you can get out, this can be when accidents happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter potty training can be especially difficult if you live in an apartment<\/a> or don\u2019t have access to your own private yard. Puppies just going out to the bathroom and not exploring don\u2019t adapt to the colder temperatures as easily as those who spend regular time outdoors.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tips for winter potty training your pup\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Go out with you Puppy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Pups love to follow us around<\/a>, so by heading outside yourself, your pup is more likely to do the same and follow suit. Give them plenty of positive encouragement and rewards<\/a> just for going outside when it\u2019s very cold or snowy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Clear an area<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      If you\u2019ve had a good covering of snow, clear an area close to the house where your pup can go to the bathroom. Deep snow can be daunting for pups, especially the smaller ones, and this can make potty training a puppy in winter a real challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Always be ready<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Sometimes potty training needs you to be ready to get your pup outside at a moment’s notice. Have everything you might need to hand, so you can get outside quickly. Coats, shoes, dog lead<\/a>, poo bags should all be on hand, so you can be ready to get out as fast as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        4)<\/strong> <\/strong>Stay Calm and Consistent<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Don\u2019t make a big fuss about cold weather or snow, just carry on as normal and reward and praise your pup for following you outside. Do make it easy for them though by clearing a path if you need to. Also be mindful that icy temperatures can hurt their paws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        5) Make potty training a puppy in winter fun<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Show your pup how much fun you can have in the winter. Keep it short at first, but by playing in snowy, cold or wet weather you create positive associations for your pup. Extend the time spent out gradually, so your pup can acclimatize to the colder temperatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        6)<\/strong> <\/strong>Have a back up plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        If your pup absolutely will not tolerate going out in the cold or wet, then it\u2019s really not worth forcing them and causing yourself added stress in the process. Use an indoor potty<\/a> or puppy pads just until the bad weather passes, and you can get your outdoor potty training back on track again. It might cause a slight delay, but it’s really not the end of the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        FAQ\u2019s <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Do I wait outside for my puppy to pee?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Within reason, yes, but you can\u2019t wait forever, and some pups can be pretty distracted from the job in hand. Wait for up to around 10 minutes, if they haven\u2019t been go back inside, but you must watch them like a hawk, chances are they will remember when they get back in so be prepared to rush them back out again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Is it ok to take a puppy out in winter? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Generally yes, but you should keep your dogs indoors or keep trips outside short if temperatures are around -5\u2103 or below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
