The green eyed monster! People often talk about their dogs or puppies being jealous. But is puppy jealousy really a thing?  Have you ever wondered if your puppy gets jealous? Do they seem to get jealous when other dogs come near, or perhaps when you\u2019re talking to someone else? What does this mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can puppies get jealous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It can certainly appear to us that our dogs are acting like they are jealous. But what usually happens is that your dog is trying to protect their resources. This might well be you, or food<\/a> or toys<\/a> from another dog, or even guarding you from other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are some breeds more jealous than others?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Certain breeds are more likely to be predisposed to guarding as a result of their genetics, and this may look like jealousy. This is typically in dogs where we have bred them to perform certain jobs like guard dogs, or even companion dogs who are overly attached to their owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While genetics and breed tendencies will play a part in your dog\u2019s behavior<\/a> there are always going to be individual temperaments, and upbringing, socialization<\/a> and early learning are going to be a factor to how your dog responds in certain situations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do puppies get jealous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Puppies protect resources, which can appear to us like jealousy at times, for a number of reasons. Here\u2019s 4 reasons your puppy might get jealous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Not getting enough attention from you<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If another dog or another person is getting lots of attention from you, it might make an insecure dog feel like they\u2019re missing out, and cause them to get in-between you, putting their paw on you, or showing other attention seeking signs<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Not wanting to share food<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      This one makes sense, I mean who likes to share food?  It would feel natural \u2018in the wild\u2019 to protect your food from other dogs, so dogs can get jealous and guard food<\/a> or treats<\/a> from other dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Being over attached to toys<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        We all have our favorites and dogs are often no different, so when other dogs are around, they might feel jealous or overprotective of that favorite squeaky toy<\/a> or Kong<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Feeling insecure<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Dogs who are secure are often happy to share, whereas dogs who feel scared<\/a>, anxious or insecure are more likely to feel worried about sharing resources, leading to aggression<\/a> or resource guarding<\/a> behavior.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          What are the signs of a jealous dog?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Dogs communicate via their body language<\/a> and behavior,<\/a> so we can generally tell how they are feeling by the things they are doing and the way they are behaving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Here are some common signs of jealousy in dogs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Getting in between people<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          If your dog is jealous of someone coming near you, maybe for a hug or a kiss, they can often get in the middle of the two of you, as they want the attention all for themselves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Growling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Growling is a common sign of a dog saying they are uncomfortable with what\u2019s going on, and are voicing this with a common distance increasing signal like growling<\/a> or snarling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Collecting and hoarding toys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Dogs who might get jealous of other dogs playing with their toys<\/a>, will often take the toys away to their crate<\/a>, bed<\/a>, or just have them in a pile close to where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Caching treats, food and chews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          If your dog gets jealous of other dogs around food, then they may take food away and cache it, much like a wild dog or wolf might, and save the food for later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Peeing on things<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Dogs will often pee on their blankets<\/a>, beds<\/a>, chews<\/a> or toys<\/a> to claim them as theirs from other dogs. This is likely a hangover from domestication<\/a>, and is a form of territorial marking. This can often look like your dog being jealous!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          How to handle a jealous puppy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          If you feel like your puppy is behaving in a jealous way, then it\u2019s important to recognize this so that you can help them, and teach them there really is no need to be jealous, or guard things!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Here\u2019s our top tips for handling puppy jealousy and some resource guarding tips too<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Provide plenty of resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          If your puppy has an abundance of things including human contact, toys<\/a> and treats<\/a>, they are less likely to want to hold onto those or act in a jealous way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Don\u2019t let them practice jealous behavior<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          If your puppy is already showing signs of jealousy, make changes including management<\/a>, so that they\u2019re not exposed to them – this might be as simple as feeding multi dogs in separate areas, so they don\u2019t guard their food bowls<\/a>, or giving chews<\/a> in crates<\/a> or separate areas like playpens<\/a>, so that there isn\u2019t conflict over resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Teach them to share and take turns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Using positive reinforcement training<\/a> you can teach your puppy to wait their turn when other dogs are around. Do this by naming treats<\/a> and handing them out to dogs by using their name when you give them, that way the dog learns to take their treat when they hear their name. It\u2019s also got a side effect of teaching your puppy their name too<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Start early and socialize them well<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          By socializing your puppy appropriately, you can help to build their confidence and teach them to share with other dogs and people. Introduce other dogs and people in a kind way that teaches them not to see these people as a threat, but that nice things happen when they\u2019re around.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Meet your puppies needs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Ensuring your puppy gets regular walks<\/a>, proper nutrition<\/a>, enough sleep,<\/a> and opportunities to just be a normal puppy, will result in a more confident dog that will be behaviourally well and more likely to feel secure. This means they\u2019ll be less likely to feel insecure and need to resource guard or feel jealous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          While using jealousy as a describable dog emotion is not without criticism, dogs do exhibit behavior which we might interpret to look like they are jealous. This can look like getting in between the thing they want most, and the dog or person coming towards it to warn them off, perhaps even displaying aggressive or other strange behaviors like peeing on it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
