Why do dogs lick the floor and carpet? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dogs lick the carpet or floor due to boredom, anxiety, something lacking in their diet, illness, habit or because maybe you spilled something delicious on it. Let\u2019s figure out why your dog licks the floor, as finding that out will help us to stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boredom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If your dog is bored then licking the floor can provide stimulation, and give them something to do. Bored dogs will seek out things in their environment to amuse themselves, and this might be licking your floor, but it might also appear in them digging <\/a>at their bed, or scratching your floors<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anxiety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Licking can be a self soothing behavior for some dogs, as the action of licking releases endorphins and can help a dog calm down<\/a> and relax. While some licking is normal, excessive or obsessive licking can indicate your dogs doing it because they\u2019re anxious.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your dog is lacking essential nutrients from their daily diet, then they may be licking the floor because they\u2019re trying to find these nutrients for themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned previously, licking can act as a self-soothing behavior and releases endorphins, so a dog who is in pain or unwell may lick the floor to try to make themselves feel better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Habit <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We all have our habits, and if your dog has been licking the floor for a while it can just become a habit and something they do as they\u2019ve got used to doing it. A bit like us flicking our hair, or leaving the spoon in our tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do dogs lick the floor if they are sick? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dogs may engage in floor licking when they are unwell, in pain, or stressed. This self-soothing behavior provides a temporary distraction from discomfort by releasing endorphins. In addition, it can be a displacement behavior, a coping mechanism for conflicted or stressed dogs. The licking serves to take their mind off it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Displacement behaviors are actions dogs exhibit out of context. Licking the floor may be normal if you spilled something yummy, but if your dog suddenly licks the carpet, floor, or walls without reason, this behavior is likely a displacement behavior. It is a means for dogs to relieve stress, shift their focus, find relief, and communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Licking and biting floors, carpets, walls, blankets<\/a> or other soft furnishings may also indicate health issues, such as gastrointestinal problems<\/a> or nausea. Dogs often lick these items to induce vomiting<\/a> or alleviate tummy ache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to stop a dog from licking the floor <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To stop your dog from licking at the floor and carpet, make sure all of their needs are met such as the right nutrition<\/a>, exercise both physica<\/a>l and mental<\/a>, and teach them basic obedience cues<\/a> to redirect them and prevent them licking the floor when they still feel the urge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Managing the area <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If your dog favors licking a particular piece of carpet, or biting a certain corner of a wall (hello puppy teething) then preventing your dog from getting access to that area is your first step. Management of the environment to prevent your dog from practicing unwanted behavior will help to \u2018break the habit\u2019 and stop your dog from doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensure they have the correct nutrition <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Making sure your dog eats the right food with the correct nutrition profile<\/a>, and the right amount<\/a> so that they\u2019re not hungry will prevent them from licking the floor to get the extras they feel they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 
If they\u2019re not keen to eat out their food out of regular dog bowls<\/a>, try feeding them from puzzle toys, as this can help make their regular food more fun to eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provide mental stimulation <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dogs need mental stimulation<\/a> to prevent boredom and give them an outlet for their breed specific needs. Whether this is through food enrichment puzzle games<\/a>, or playing with toys<\/a>, mental stimulation can help \u2018scratch that itch\u2019 to do something, and stop them going self-employed and licking your floors.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give an appropriate amount of physical exercise <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This should not be intense games of ball throwing and fetch<\/a> which can raise adrenalin and white leaving a dog physically tired, can cause long term problems due to increased periods of arousal with no off button or time to relax. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give them licking opportunities <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you have a \u2018dog who cannot control their licker\u2019 then providing opportunities for safe licking, like lickimats, can help stop your dog licking floors or things you don\u2019t want them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


You can also use dog safe peanut butter or liver paste spread on the edge of the bath while you bathe them<\/a>, or giving them a spruce up during a grooming session<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach your dog basic obedience commands <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Teaching basic obedience commands<\/a> is not only mentally enriching, and helps provide your dog with plenty of opportunities for reward, it also makes them easier to live with as you can ask them to do other things than licking the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Clicker training <\/a>and reward based training <\/a>is great for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach your dog to leave it <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you have a dog who is constantly licking the floor, it\u2019s important to look at the underlying cause that\u2019s causing the floor licking, be it behavioral<\/a> or physical.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To rule out anything medical we recommend you take your dog for a quick visit to the Vet<\/a>, you can often tell by their body language<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0if they are experiencing pain, and if there is any sickness<\/a> or diarrhea<\/a> it\u2019s definitely worth checking in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making sure your puppy\u2019s basic needs are fulfilled with the correct diet and nutrition<\/a>, appropriate mental<\/a> and physical exercise<\/a>, management<\/a> of the environment, and teaching your dog cues like leave it<\/a> with positive reinforcement<\/a>, will all help to stop them licking the floor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
