In this article, we\u2019ll go over some of the questions you must have (yes, we can read minds), and give you the key steps to help your puppy get well acquainted with their&nbsp;<em>crate<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Emphasis on <em>crate. <\/em>Not a <em>small prison<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s get to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"paywall\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it&#8217;s important to crate train your puppy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.battersea.org.uk\/pet-advice\/dog-advice\/how-crate-train-your-dog\">a bunch of good reasons<\/a>.&nbsp;Here\u2019s a nice list of benefits of crate training a puppy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To keep your puppy safe when you can\u2019t supervise them at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To give your puppy a comfortable place to sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It helps brilliantly with toilet training.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It makes travelling easier, whether by car or plane \u2013 even motorcycles if done properly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To make vet visits go smoothly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To get used to being separated from you \u2013 nobody wants separation anxiety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Puppy-Chewing-Crate-Training.png\" alt=\"Puppy Chewing Crate Training\" class=\"wp-image-542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Puppy-Chewing-Crate-Training.png 800w, https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Puppy-Chewing-Crate-Training-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Puppy-Chewing-Crate-Training-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Puppy-Chewing-Crate-Training-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to crate train a puppy: A 7 Part Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Crate training a puppy can be challenging when training your pup. However, it is important to establish positive associations with the crate both for you and pup. Our puppy crate training guide is int seven easy parts so you can monitor your pup\u2019s progress and make sure they\u2019re on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 1: Crates and puppies: a match made in heaven.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of crates, the way to win a puppy\u2019s heart is through their stomach. Treats play a huge part in helping associate the crate with nice things \u2013 you know, just like eating Jaffa Cakes during break time at school made you think it wasn\u2019t too bad after all.&nbsp;The tastier the <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/feeding\/best-healthy-puppy-training-treats\/\">treat<\/a>, the better, and crate training a puppy and delicious rewards, really do go hand in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way we\u2019ll do this is simple \u2013 letting them know that where there is a crate, there are treats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:&nbsp;<\/strong>Get a couple of soft treats ready to toss them inside the crate.&nbsp;<br>Assuming your aim is ace, your puppy will quickly waddle to them. Give them some praise and throw more in \u2013 target the back of the crate so that they go all the way in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:&nbsp;<\/strong>After doing this a couple of times, wait a second or two after your puppy has eaten their last treat before you throw the next one in. If all goes well, you should start seeing them working out that if they stay in the crate the treats will keep coming!<br>When they come out of the crate, just wait and see if they go back in. If they don\u2019t, it just means they might need a few more goes to get it. Go back to Step 1 and get tossing treats inside).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong>&nbsp;Cues are next. When they\u2019re still inside the crate, give your puppy a gentle verbal cue such as \u2018out\u2019, \u2018free\u2019, or \u2018run while you can\u2019 \u2013 up to you what you pick, but the shorter the better. Then, let them see you place a treat on the floor outside of the crate.&nbsp;<br>This is called a&nbsp;<strong>release cue<\/strong>&nbsp;and is there to let your puppy know that they\u2019re free to leave the crate. It teaches puppies not to rush out of the crate, and helps with building self-control.&nbsp;<br>Maybe a release cue would be good to solve our fascination with sarcasm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:&nbsp;<\/strong>Now wait and see if your puppy goes back into the crate in hopes to find more treats without you throwing them in. If they do, fab. Offer lots of praise and start throwing treats in again like confetti. In moderation. After a few minutes of this game, see if your puppy will stay slightly longer in the crate (about two or three seconds) between your treat-throwing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Training Tips&nbsp;when you start:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t hover over the crate when they\u2019re inside. Sit at the side so they\u2019re able to feel they can leave whenever they like and avoid developing claustrophobia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staring is always rude. Try not to stare at your puppy when they\u2019re coming in or out of the crate. Puppies can find it pretty overwhelming and confrontational. Remember how your parents glared at your questionable hair dye choices? Be the cool parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know they\u2019re addictive, but avoid petting or stroking when giving verbal praise as it will likely be distracting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this stage in crate training a puppy, avoid using a cue to tell your puppy to go into their crate. Our first mission is to help them work out that going in the crate earns them good treats. We\u2019ll add cues for going in the crate later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the crate door open for now! Let\u2019s first build trust and get your puppy feeling good in the crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your training sessions short \u2013 5 minutes tops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 2: Staying inside (with the door open)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once learning that the crate equals wonderful things, our next step in crate training a puppy is to encourage them to stay in there longer. We\u2019ll frame it as being their choice, and that we\u2019re not just shutting them in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leave the door alone for now.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:&nbsp;<\/strong>Throw the treats inside the crate as you did in Part 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Start pausing a few seconds in between throwing the treats in. Your puppy should start looking ready, with eyes that say \u2018Right, where\u2019s the next one\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong>&nbsp;Repeat this 5 times, waiting 5 seconds between each treat. After they go inside, give them their cue to come out and drop a treat outside of the crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong>&nbsp;Now, wait for your puppy to go inside and do 5 more repetitions at a longer duration; make it 7 seconds before you throw the next treat in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5:&nbsp;<\/strong>Give your release cue, and drop the treat on the floor outside of the crate again. Soon enough, your puppy will start to respond to the cue and come running out without the need for a treat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Training Tips&nbsp;for this part:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start this next part in crate training your puppy, you\u2019ll need to practice the exercises in the previous section (Part 2) over a number of sessions in order to build up the time the puppy is comfortable in the crate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend doing two or three sessions a day for the first 5 days until you feel like you can move on to the next session. Remember that every puppy is unique, and might need more time to get it right \u2013 they\u2019ll let you know!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that forcing love never really turns out well\u2026so don\u2019t shut the door on them while they\u2019re inside until you know they\u2019re ready to move on to the next level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 3:&nbsp;Teaching a \u2018cue\u2019 to go inside the crate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that your puppy knows the crate is a source of joy, we can start adding a cue to ask them to go&nbsp;inside when we need them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Crate-Training-a-Puppy.png\" alt=\"Teaching a Puppy to go Inside Crate Training \" class=\"wp-image-544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Crate-Training-a-Puppy.png 800w, https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Crate-Training-a-Puppy-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Crate-Training-a-Puppy-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Crate-Training-a-Puppy-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Good boy!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use any cue of your choice. \u201cCrate\u201d, \u201cbox\u201d, or \u201cin\u201d are some of the most common cues for puppy crate training. But there\u2019s nothing stopping you from using anything else, like \u201cfish\u201d. Why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;As your puppy walks into the crate, say your cue, and toss a treat in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:&nbsp;<\/strong>Give your \u2018out\u2019 cue and wait for your puppy to leave the crate.<br>Repeat this several times so your puppy starts to learn that after following your \u201cin\u201d cue, they get rewarded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:&nbsp;<\/strong>Now to the drumroll. Say your \u2018in\u2019 cue without tossing a treat in, and wait for your puppy to go in.&nbsp;It might take them a couple of seconds to go in, which is completely fine. You might want to use a marker word such as \u2018good\u2019 and don\u2019t forget to throw a treat in to pay them for a job well done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong>&nbsp;Use your \u201cout\u201d cue and wait for them to leave their crate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5:&nbsp;<\/strong>Continue practicing teaching your puppy the difference between \u2018in\u2019 cues (go in your crate for a reward) and \u2018out\u2019 cues (come out of your crate \u2013 coming out of the crate is now a reward).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 6:&nbsp;<\/strong>After your puppy has followed the cue to go in, and has gone inside the crate, start to wait a second or two before your \u2018good\u2019 marker and give them their treat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 7:&nbsp;<\/strong>Eventually, build up the pauses to at least 10 seconds before they get their marker and a treat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes we will explain maker words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>Marker words<\/strong> give a clear signal to your puppy that they did the right thing at that exact moment. They work well because they\u2019re always followed up with a food reward.&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Markers, for puppy crate training can be pretty much anything. Common markers used in dog training are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-training\/training-basics\/puppy-clicker-training\/\"><strong>Clickers<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;A small box or button which makes a clicking noise when pressed (It\u2019s actually quite impressive how well this work. Hats tipped.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verbal Markers:<\/strong>&nbsp;Short words such as \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018good\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visual Markers:<\/strong>&nbsp;A thumbs-up, sticking your tongue out (no reason why this can\u2019t work) or a torch; you\u2019ll often see these used with deaf dogs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Whistle Markers:<\/strong>&nbsp;Guide dogs and assistance dogs are often trained with a whistle. It goes \u2018beep\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Now onto some new tips:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t repeat cues.&nbsp;<\/strong>It\u2019s important that your puppy learns to follow through instructions when asked for the first time. By repeating cues, you\u2019re teaching them that they\u2019re allowed to hear it a few times until they respond. Also, that you can make great parrot impressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phase the&nbsp;<\/strong><em><strong>\u2018out\u2019 rewards.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>You want your puppy to learn that going into the crate is what will earn them the bigger reward. When they start getting the hang of it, you can phase out the rewards for coming out.<em>&nbsp;<\/em>This is because coming out will in fact be the reward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 4: Moving around when your puppy is in the crate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once, you\u2019ve cracked this part of crate training a puppy and your they are going into the crate on cue and staying for 10 seconds before you give them a reward, you can increase the difficulty by moving around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want them to learn that we\u2019re not always going to be next to the crate, but also moving around. They\u2019re also going to learn to stay until you ask them to leave.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;With your \u201cin\u201d cue, ask your puppy to go into the crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Move one step away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong>&nbsp;If they stay where they are, hurray. Say your marker word \u2018good\u2019 and reward them with a treat in the crate. Repeat this 5 times and then cue them to \u2018out\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong>&nbsp;Do the same as in Steps 1 -3, but move 2 steps away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong>&nbsp;Now try moving 3 steps or walking around the crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong>&nbsp;Have you made it? Brilliant!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote pro-tip is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Bonus tip: <\/strong>Check on their mood. Do they look all right? It\u2019s important that the training process is a positive experience for your puppy. If they start to seem uncomfortable or unhappy, take a step back in the training process or take a break.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You can try again later!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 5: Closing the door on the crate&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Closing the crate door can be a huge deal breaker for some puppies during the early stages of the crate training your puppy. Can\u2019t blame them, you probably wouldn\u2019t like to be shut in a box either. Have you ever been trapped in a lift? It\u2019s not the same, but it\u2019s not far off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this step, we want to teach them that being confined is a safe, good thing \u2013 let\u2019s go slow and steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;Ask your puppy to go into the crate. When they go in, gently close the door but don\u2019t latch it shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Say your marker word, and throw a treat in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong>&nbsp;Open the door and then gently close it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong>&nbsp;Repeat your marker word, and gently close it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong>&nbsp;Repeat steps 2 \u2013 4 for about 5 times before giving your \u2018out\u2019 cue and allowing your puppy to come out of the crate. Remember to shower them with rewards! Closing the door is a big accomplishment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 6: Building duration with a closed door&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that the door doesn\u2019t look so threatening (especially because of the treats they get), we want to keep the door closed for a few seconds more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;Close the door, and see if you can count to 5 seconds with the door closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Mark it with \u2018good\u2019 and drop a treat&nbsp;through the crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat this 5 times before you let them out. If your puppy is feeling stressed, let them out and take a break, make it easier the next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 7: Putting it All Together&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you practice this time, move around the room with the door of their crate closed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come back to reward them with lots of enthusiasm! They\u2019ve done brilliantly. Give yourself a pat on the back too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote pro-tip is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>PRO TIP: <\/strong>Go Slowly<em> \u2013 <\/em>Don\u2019t rush this part! Take as many breaks as you need so that your puppy stays happy while training.&nbsp; As my mother would say &#8211; thinking positively is key to success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy is whining, scratching at the crate door, you\u2019ve gone too fast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to crate train a puppy at night<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first step in the crate training a puppy journey. The first night you bring your puppy home you should have them sleep in their crate next to your bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way, you\u2019ll make sure everyone gets enough sleep and that you can hear them when they wake up to go to the toilet \u2013 it\u2019s likely that they will!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they do, take your puppy to their toilet area and reward them. Remember to keep calm and relaxed \u2013 we don\u2019t want them to think it\u2019s the morning!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they wake up again but have just been to the loo, they are likely just a bit distressed at being on their own. This is where you\u2019ll need to resist the puppy eyes. Gently talk to them and let them sniff your hand through the crate but avoid the temptation of putting your puppy in your bed!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if you want them on your bed, you can take them out. Oh, and just refrain from punishment altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are struggling with crate training, and need some inspiration for ideas on how to better it, then below are a few ways you can approach crate training a puppy, to make it more fun, and less stressful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Take breaks<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Long puppy crate training sessions aren\u2019t code for successful training. Minutes are a long time for puppies, so training for too long can make your puppy feel tired or bored. Sessions lasting about 5 minutes are much better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Feed their meals inside<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To get them seeing eye to eye with the crate, start feeding them their meals inside the crate. When they are eating, shut the door for a few minutes to show them it won\u2019t swallow them whole.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Be spontaneous<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unleash your inner fairy godmother and leave treats or new toys inside the crate for your puppy to find on their own. Stuffed puzzle toys with some peanut butter are fantastic \u2013 wait till you see the full body tail wag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Make it dark and cozy<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most puppies enjoy having their crate covered; it makes it dark and cozy.
