Once you have your puppy at home, you will most likely be given a wormer by your veterinarian. After worming them weekly until twelve weeks, you should worm every month until they are 6 months old, and then after that every 3 -6 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puppies may be born with worms<\/a>, and as puppies grow and mature, so do their immune system. You should, for this reason, worm a puppy from the early stages of their life, your breeder or rescue center should have wormed them every week from two\/three weeks until the twelve-week mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How often should you worm an adult dog?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As a general rule, Vets recommend that you should worm a dog every 3-6 months. However, this is very dependent on your dog\u2019s lifestyle and other factors such as age, where your dog lives (outside vs inside), your geographical location (country vs urban) and what type of wormer you use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be aware: You can worm your dog too often<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, you can worm a puppy or your dog too often! And it has no obvious benefit. In fact, over-worming your dog can actually backfire, and make your dog build up a tolerance \u2013 you most certainly don\u2019t want that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can I tell if my puppy has worms?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On your own, it\u2019s not so easy to tell if your puppy has worms for sure. But your veterinarian will definitely know by looking at your dog\u2019s poo under a microscope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roundworms usually don\u2019t cause illness, but sometimes they can make dogs very ill. Tapeworms, Hookworms and Whipworms, however, unless present in large numbers, are less of a health threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where can I get worming tablets for a puppy? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best kind of wormers are ones that live on your vet\u2019s shelf.  These are usually ones that target several types of worms instead of just one. Gotta get them all, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can usually buy them from your vet without a consultation fee (yay!) as long as they see your dog at least annually to make sure they\u2019re healthy. Otherwise, you can also buy them from most online pet pharmacies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What types of wormers can I get for my puppy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to worming puppies, there are many different wormers and they  come in all shapes and sizes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tablet: <\/strong>We find tablets to be the easiest ones to use, and most enjoyable for your puppy since they tend to be quite tasty.  We\u2019re big fans of the Drontal Tasty Bone Wormer<\/a>, Cestem Flavoured wormer<\/a>, Terraworm Tablets<\/a> and the Prazitel Worming tablet<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 we trust they\u2019ll serve you well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A paste: <\/strong>These are often given to puppies as they can be administered in small doses. We\u2019re quite fond of the Panacur paste wormer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A granular powder: <\/strong>These are easy to use, as you can sprinkle them on your puppy\u2019s food. Panacur\u2019s granular wormer <\/a>and Granofen Worming Granules for Dogs<\/a> are quite ace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A liquid: <\/strong>Liquid wormers can be given to puppies that are up to one year old. Drontal puppy suspension<\/a> works quite well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Big Challenge: How do I give my puppy a wormer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Worming puppies can be a challenge, as with many things in life, it can be a challenge, and certainly won\u2019t be mastered first time. You could easily give your puppy anything by hiding it in food, so you\u2019ll find wormers to be the perfect candidates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRO TIP: <\/strong>You can easily turn it into a game \u2013 have your puppy find or catch the tablet inside their food.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Toss an \u2018empty\u2019 treat at your puppy \u2013 encouraging them to catch it. Maybe they\u2019ll catch it, maybe they won\u2019t, but if they eat it, in the end, that\u2019s all that counts! Then toss a treat with a wormer in, and toss an empty treat once again, until your puppy ate all its dog wormer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

These few treats are particularly great for hiding worming tablets. Simply split the tablet into halves or quarters to make it very small, and put it inside:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
