Teaching your puppy their name is really key to a happy relationship together and is generally one of the first few things you train them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why though? Well, here are a few reasons why knowing their name is important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Attention!!! \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;It lets your puppy know you need them to check in with you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recall \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>It lays the foundations of getting them to come to you.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bonding \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>It\u2019s how they will be known for the rest of their lives, so it\u2019s important to start off on the right foot, or paw!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safety \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>If god forbid, they ever get lost, it\u2019s what will be used to call them. I know it doesn\u2019t bear thinking about but it\u2019s good to be realistic sometimes!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to teach a puppy their name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no easy way to teach a puppy its name, it requires a lot of patience. Start by using the name 10 times a day, as a minimum, say the puppy\u2019s name, and as soon as they look at you, mark this behavior with a reward or a treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How quickly can puppies learn their names?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Puppies can learn their names in as little as three days, but in general, you will have to practice using their name a lot. Depending on the type of dog breed you have, and their intelligence level, they can be easier to train than others. Always use positive reinforcement too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to name a dog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the hardest steps in becoming a new dog owner. Think of what name you would be happy to shout in public. It is better to choose a short name, which is of 1 or 2 syllables or choose a name that can have a short version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to teach a puppy its name in 3 easy steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So here we go\u2026 the main event, how to teach a puppy its name in 3 easy steps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Attach value to their name<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin we need to attach value to the puppy\u2019s name<strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;We want our puppy to hear their name and think \u2018Yes! That word means good times\u2019 so use some really strong-smelling, yummy treats. We have an article on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/feeding\/best-healthy-puppy-training-treats\/\">healthy puppy treats<\/a>&nbsp;here. Once they have understood that first part, we\u2019ll start rewarding them when they respond to their name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get started you\u2019ll need<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some yummy treats that are in a treat pouch, or in a pot on the side<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A puppy who\u2019s been to the toilet&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A low-distraction environment \u2013 your lounge or kitchen is perfect for this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Have your puppy in front of you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have your puppy in front of you and your treats in your pocket or on the side. Say their name and immediately give them a treat to their mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat this step 5 times just saying their name and handing them a treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Name, Marker, Treat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now for the next step, say their name and drop the treat on the floor. Your puppy will now have to eat the treat from the floor rather than be fed to its mouth. As your puppy almost finishes eating the treat from the floor, say their name. The marker word lets them know \u2018yes, that\u2019s exactly what I wanted\u2019 and is a promise that a treat is coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep repeating this throwing the treat further away each time so that they have to scamper off to eat it. Turn it into a fun game, puppies love \u2018the name game\u2019. Charlie-boo, Charlie-kins, Mr Charles, or Prince Charles will have to wait til \u2018Charlie\u2019 is a little older and can respond to their regular name when you call them first. Also, make sure everyone in your family and household is using the same name too!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t use an embarrassing name<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a name that won\u2019t be embarrassing when you call them in the park and is short and easy to remember. Yes, Notorious D.O.G might sound funny NOW, but are you going to feel silly calling \u2018Notorious\u2019 when you\u2019re out on a walk? We rest our case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practise everywhere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Generalisation is so important \u2013 practice indoors to begin with. The lounge is quite an easy place to start training with low distractions, then try the hallway, then the yard, then in a quiet area of the park, and so on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repetition is key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Repetition is how dogs learn best, as the saying goes \u2018practice makes perfect\u2019 well, because it\u2019s true. Do 3 training sessions per day and your puppy will learn its name super-fast!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t repeat their name though<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You only need to say it once \u2013 if you find yourself repeating their name, go back a step or move to an easier location where they\u2019re not so distracted and can focus on you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dogs \u2018hear\u2019 our emotions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use your \u2018happy voice\u2019 as dogs respond to that really well, don\u2019t use your puppy\u2019s name in a gruff or cross voice, we want them to never worry about hearing their name. They can pick up on our moods and emotions just by the tone of our voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let them know they did the right thing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your marker word is going to make a big difference to your puppy\u2019s understanding of what they\u2019re being rewarded for, you could use a clicker instead if you wanted. Simples!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Or fade out rewards too soon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your puppy will pick this game up quickly but don\u2019t fade out some form of reward too soon, we want them to always know that responding to their name is a good thing to do. Even just telling them, in your happy voice, what a good boy or girl they are will make most dogs go loose-bodied and wiggly!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to teach a puppy its name without treats?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be teaching your puppy all sorts of things with treats already; toilet training, recall, sitting\u2026the list is endless. But treats to add up if we\u2019re not careful, so it might be smart to dose treats better to keep an eye on their diet and nutrition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why you (and your puppy) might benefit from avoiding using treats throughout the entire training period.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To teach a puppy its name without treats, all you need is something else to replace treats with that is equally as rewarding.
