Way up there on the \u2018why is my puppy biting me hard\u2019 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To see the difference between aggressive puppy biting and play biting\/general puppy mouthing, we can ask a couple of questions, and think about \u2018What\u2019s the function\u2019 of the behavior i.e what purpose does it serve?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is your <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/grooming\/puppy-teething\/\">puppy teething<\/a>? If the answer is yes, then rest assured that your puppy will be biting a LOT and that they simply haven\u2019t learned that nope, you are not one of their siblings and you don\u2019t need to be chewed on like one. What\u2019s the function in this case? Mouthing on things makes my teeth and gums feel better. Well, the function might be to simply make you stop. Puppies learn that using teeth on skin makes the human stop what they\u2019re doing (well duh, it hurts us of course we stop).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it in their breed\u2019s genetic make-up to be a bit nippy or mouthy? Herding dogs are meant to run and nip at fast moving things (sorry kids!!) whereas your Retrievers like to have things in their mouths, and sometimes, often that\u2019s our hands. Ouch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a handy table from our <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-behavior\/barking-and-aggression\/puppy-aggression\/\">puppy aggression <\/a>article that should help you figure out if it\u2019s aggressive behavior or if it\u2019s playing. Dogs tell us a lot from their body language, we should listen more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"Scrollable table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Aggression<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Play<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A low growl &#8211; accompanied with a freeze<\/td><td>A high growl with lots of movement<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Snapping and grabbing<\/td><td>Tugging<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A forward body stance &#8211; often frozen&nbsp;<\/td><td>A backward stance with bum in the air &#8211; play bow<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Stiff body posture &#8211; looks tight<\/td><td>Loose body posture &#8211; looks wiggly<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Tight furrowed brow &#8211; hard stare &#8211; closed mouth<\/td><td>Soft face &#8211; open mouthed, lips covering teeth<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to stop aggressive puppy biting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So here\u2019s some good news\u2026 aggressive puppy biting can be solved in three easy steps.&nbsp; Firstly prevention &#8211; you can prevent aggressive puppy biting by making sure all their basic needs are met. You can then think about redirecting onto an appropriate toy when your puppy goes a little cray cray and you can also train an alternative behavior so that instead of aggressively biting you, they\u2019ll be doing something else instead\u2026 How does that sound? Great, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prevention &#8211; Making sure your puppy\u2019s basic needs are met<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-behavior\/separation-and-sleep\/how-to-get-a-puppy-to-sleep-through-the-night\/\">Puppies need to sleep<\/a> &#8211; sleep, sleep, sleep, we are always stressing about sleep to new owners but a lack of sleep is a huge one for aggressive puppy biting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Puppies bite defensively when inappropriately or over-handled &#8211; no they\u2019re not toys, and they might not want to be pushed around and into a harness, gently does it, and oh don\u2019t forget treats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chew toys &#8211; lots of them! We recommend long fleece strips plaited into long tuggers or if you want to \u2018add to basket\u2019 check out these <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3smQewA\">excellent tug toys by tug-e-nuff<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>Train your puppy to do something else<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy is one of those that <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-behavior\/biting-and-chewing\/how-to-stop-puppy-biting-feet\/\">bite your feet<\/a>, or latches on as you walk across the lounge you\u2019ll want to teach them to do something else when they come towards you instead. How about a nice sit? Of course, a lot of puppies will simply grow out of biting, but you\u2019re going to be sore in the short term, and don\u2019t you want to learn how to reduce it?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to seek professional help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy\u2019s aggressive biting has come on suddenly and you\u2019re worried then we would always suggest talking to a professional.
