Take it slowly and gently so they learn it\u2019s a great place to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They have had negative experiences of being confined in a crate<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If your puppy has associated negative feelings with being in a crate then they may struggle. Being crated for too long, being left to cry it out, being crated with too many puppies in a commercial or puppy farm set up, or being crated in a scary situation like in a noisy van or cargo hold, any prior negative experience can cause anxiety around the crate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dogs are social creatures and want to be with us<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder that your puppy is whining if they are on their own. All the fun stuff happens outside of the crate, so, naturally, your puppy would prefer to be out there with you, than on their own, in there.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puppies need the toilet a lot!<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Make sure your puppy is getting regular toilet breaks, as they may be whining or barking in their crate as they\u2019re desperate for the toilet. To get a handle on the barking in the crate, first, we need to establish why our puppy is crying in their crate to create a training plan to help them like it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We first look at some basics of selecting the right crate and making it the best place for the puppy to be, making sure their needs outside of the crate are being met, and then start teaching them that they\u2019ll only be in the crate as long as they can cope with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with the right crate and make it the best place to be<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Choose the right size and style crate for your puppy and your home set up, we reviewed some <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/puppy-essentials\/best-puppy-crates\/\">puppy crates<\/a> here for you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure the crate is comfy and cozy &#8211; some puppies prefer a blanket over the top to darken things a little, all puppies will want a nice <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/new-puppy\/puppy-essentials\/best-puppy-beds\/\">cozy puppy bed<\/a> to sleep in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Provide fun things to do in your puppy\u2019s crate, perhaps the crate fairy can come and hide treats and toys for your puppy to find on their own?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Feed your puppy their meals in the crate, with the door open to begin with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put the crate in the right place in your house.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We recommend this is in your bedroom at night time, especially in the first few weeks. Once they\u2019ve settled in and are sleeping through the night you can move the crate.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In the daytime, you\u2019ll want the crate in your main living space, that way you can keep an eye on your puppy and what they\u2019re up to, and they can tell you when they need the toilet!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To make sure all of your puppy\u2019s needs are met you will need to:<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure your puppy is getting enough exercise before expecting them to be ok resting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure your pet is getting the right kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/zigzag.dog\/en-us\/blog\/puppy-health\/feeding\/puppy-nutrition-guide\/\">puppy nutrition<\/a> &#8211; we get hangry, and it\u2019s not surprising puppies do too! Those sore gums are enough to make anyone cry a little.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure water is available to your puppy 24\/7. Simples!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Regulate the temperature, your puppy won\u2019t appreciate being in a draughty hallway, or in an airless room, so keep an eye on how hot or cold the area is, especially overnight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transfer your puppy to the crate when they are sleeping<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Puppies like to fall asleep everywhere, especially on us! When they fall asleep elsewhere, transfer them to the crate so they get used to sleeping in there and waking up there. Don\u2019t rush the process, but do it at your puppies pace instead, so they won\u2019t feel the need to panic at being shut-in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teach your puppy in and out of the crate&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This way they get used to the door being closed and opened and that they come out when quiet and calm. It teaches them not to scratch or bark for attention because they\u2019ve learned what they need to do to be let out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What not to do when the puppy is whining?<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019ve hopefully given you a list of things to do to stop your puppy whining in their crate, but maybe there are some things we need to help you understand not to do?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t let them cry it out<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We hear this so often, \u2018I thought she\u2019d stop eventually\u2019 but umm, well she didn\u2019t did she? In fact, what tends to happen when we let puppies cry it out is a few things:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>The crying gets louder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>They learn to cry louder because eventually, we can\u2019t take listening any more, or more often our worry about the neighbors complaining increases and we go to them, so they learn that \u2018wow, crying worked after all, better keep going with that tactic\u2019 and eventually they learn just to do it as an automatic behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>They injure themselves trying to escape.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>When crying doesn\u2019t work a frightened puppy will try other means of getting to you, or getting out of the prison they feel they are locked in. They can do themselves serious injury, losing teeth, pulling out claws or even getting their face trapped in the crate. I know, it\u2019s scary but it\u2019s pretty serious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>They give up and this has a devastating effect on their emotional wellbeing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>When an animal has tried many ways to change the outcome of their circumstances, and nothing they try works they give up and often go into a state of what\u2019s called Learned Helplessness. This can impact the way they feel about other situations and scenarios as they do not feel in control and this anxiety can generalise across your puppy\u2019s day to day life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t punish them<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Punishment is not going to work to help your puppy feel better is it? Yet still, we hear of people who shout at or bang the crate to frighten the puppy to make them be quiet. If your puppy is feeling upset or worried about being inside the crate, there\u2019s different things you can do to help calm their nerves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make it cozy: <\/strong>Add blankets, toys, or soft materials that could help the crate turn into more of a cozy, comfortable chilling nook for them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comfort them: <\/strong>It might be that they need some love and reassurance from you. Talk to them in a gentle voice, and pet them gently with your fingers through the crate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make sure they\u2019re ready:<\/strong> If your pup is struggling a little too much to get used to the crate, it might be a sign that they\u2019re simply not ready for it yet. However, if the crying persists or seems a little excessive, it might be time to tweak your approach. Remember that crate training takes patience and consistency, so while there\u2019s no need to jump at every whimper, it\u2019s important not to ignore signs of distress.
